India-Nepal Standoff. Nepal Police Open Fire at Indian Border
The Nepalese border guarding force open fire on a crowd killing a 22yo man and injuring 2 others. Nepal Sastra Police targeted farmers at Sitamarhi, an Indian state of Bihar. The BGF also detained a person identified as 45yo lagan Yadav after this incident. The incident comes in the midst of the raging boundary dispute between the two countries after the kathmandu released a new map laying claim over Lipulekh, Kalapani and limpiyadhura.
'The Nepalese side is claiming that there was a group of Indians who tried to illegally cross the India Nepal border. On the other side, Indian side says that they were set of Indian farmers who were there when suddenly without any provocation the Nepalese side started the rounds against them.
SSB (Seema Suraksha Bal) which mans the border has confirmed that the incident has taken place and has sent a report to the Indian Home Ministery. India’s ministery of external affairs has responded to Nepal’s new map saying that that “The artificial enlargement of domain is not based on any historical evidence and is not tangible. Infact it is voilative of the current understanding between the two nations”.
Meanwhile DG(SSB) had issued a statement saying a local issue led to altercation which was avoidable. Look at the timing of this 'avoidable' altercation. It comes in the middle of another provocation. Nepal govt is busy altering maps in the middle of a pandemic and the people of Nepal are protesting against their govt, against PM Oli's misplaced priorities.
As of now the ties between India and Nepal has come under strain after India's defence minister Mr. Raj Nath Singh inaugurated a 80km long strategic crucial road connecting Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttrakhand on may 8. Nepal reacted sharply to the inauguration claiming that it passes through Nepalese territory.
People of nepal have alleged that the KP Oli govt has been indulged in corruption as far as its battle against COVID-19 pandemic has been concerned. There have been large scale demonstrations. Thousands hit the streets of Kathmandu for a peaceful protest which was the second protest in a week. The people of Nepal are demanding financial transparency and better management of the pandemic. 10 anti-govt protestors including foreign nationals were arrested during demonstrations over the weekend in Kathmandu.
This dispute is not new neither is the road over which Nepal is upset. India says it built a road on it own side of the border. The project has been in public domain since 2008 and the area of Lipulekh has been in India’s possession for more than 60 years. China too has recognised India's sovereignty here in the past. In 2015 and India-China joint statement agreed to expand bilateral trade through the Lipulekh pass. Since Nepal take China's words so seriously, it should read this. India has been helping nepal when it comes to the COVID crisis, sending medicines to nepal and making sure that despite the lockdown both the sides trade continuous to flow between the two countries. PM KP Oli's attempt at claiming India for the Wuhan virus are clearly not working with its own people. It seems Nepal’s PM Oli has led self- preservation trump national interest.
Nepal's parliament has unanimously approved the new map and the controversial map shows Indian territories as part of nepal. What nepal has done when it comes to the new nepali map, it is at the behest of a certain country which ofcourse is China because the increased influence of chinese in nepal is something that is very public in nature.

China is known to use Indian neighbours as proxies. Young and unstable democracies in political transition are an easy target for Beijing. China also had a history of meddling in Nepal’s internal affairs. The Chinese ambassador is said to have mediated between the warring factions of the ruling party, the Nepal Communist Party. China's political influence has definitely grown in Nepal and India is aware of this.
New Delhi has expressed its displeasure over Nepal's actions. But it has largely remained silent on the issue. The silence is turning out to be a cause of concern.
